Grief and bereavement are normal and one’s emotional response to death. Whether it was known the person was dying or not ahead of time does not change the reaction. The emotions might change, the thought process may be different, but death is traumatic! Death by suicide is different than other ways one could die; accident, illness, natural disaster, age-suicide is a choice one makes and the survivor or survivors wonder why?
Think Robin Williams-an amazing actor, talented, from the outside looks like he had it all; fame, fortune, humor, many movies behind him…as one gets to know his history, they learn of his health both physical and mental and what was going on for him. None of this was obvious to the natural eye and certainly as a bystander-most thought he was normal and all was fine.
Suicide takes one by surprise. It is not the way one expects someone to die. It seems unnatural.
But if you sit and think about it, why would one choose to end their life in such a way? What must be going on inside their head for them to choose suicide, to think it is the only way? How is it that those of us on the outside cannot see or are not aware of their loved one’s feeling and thoughts? Would we not see their pain, their torment?
Many people have trouble discussing suicide and might not reach out to you. This could leave you feeling isolated or abandoned. Some religions limit the rituals available to people who’ve died by suicide, which could also leave you feeling alone. Support groups and counseling allow one to talk about their emotions and pain, their go through the grief process in a healthy way and with support.
